Fortune + De Beers Group | Episode 1 | Q&A: Letsile Tebogo
How one world champion’s triumph was forged under pressure

In 2024, 200-meter sprinter and De Beers ambassador Letsile Tebogo beat the odds and became a gold medalist.
It took 19.46 seconds for track athlete Letsile Tebogo to make history in 2024. The 21-year-old sprinter surprised the world by winning the 200-meter men’s race in Paris, making him the first African athlete to win gold in the category and the first Botswanan to win a gold medal—ever.
Before taking the world stage in July 2024, Tebogo was an underdog. He placed sixth in the 100-meter final, and runners from rival countries, such as Jamaica and the U.S., were favored to snag gold in the 200-meter race. But Tebogo prevailed under pressure and beat the competition by tenths of a second. The victory made his country proud and has inspired a new generation of African athletes.
Now, Tebogo is the newest global brand ambassador for De Beers Group, the global diamond company with a deep connection to Botswana. In honor of this partnership, the company commissioned a bracelet made of natural diamonds for Tebogo that represents his strong familial roots and pride for his home country. The collaboration builds on Botswana’s remarkable journey to becoming a world-leading diamond producer. The longstanding partnership between the government of Botswana and De Beers has seen the country use its resource wealth for economic development, and the creation of new opportunities in education and sports has helped cultivate talents, such as Tebogo.
The world-class athlete took a break from his training to sit down with Fortune Brand Studio and talk about his triumphant journey, his late mother’s strong influence on his career, and what the future holds next.
