Partnering with host countries

Opportunity through partnerships

Because diamonds are often discovered in remote areas, our mining and discovery activities can bring new economic and social development opportunities to local communities. We are guided by internationally-recognised social development goals, and we strive to be a strong, collaborative partner with host countries. Our aim is to make meaningful and long-lasting contributions to local and national development.

Angola

Our future starts here

Angola offers unrivalled opportunities to discover and develop new natural diamond deposits. Since signing two discovery agreements with the Government of Angola in 2022 and following the granting of the exploration titles in 2023, De Beers has undertaken focused prospecting activities, including airborne surveys and discovery drilling. These efforts led to the discovery of a new kimberlite field in July 2025. In parallel, we have continued to deliver our commitments to support and advance Angola’s diamond sector for the benefit of Angola’s citizens, as outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding signed in February 2024. Key initiatives include collaboration with our partner Endiama to review geological information, introduction of traceability technology and provenance initiatives; and the development of socio-economic opportunities through Building Forever-aligned programmes, including Okavango Eternal and community education initiatives. Additional efforts have included hosting high-level Angolan delegations at De Beers operations and delivering tailored training and development programmes for Angolan professionals to support skills development across the sector. A highlight of 2025 was the Luanda Accord – a shared initiative between producer countries, De Beers and key industry stakeholders to invest in category marketing through the Natural Diamond Council.

Since 2006, we have signed 10 Impact Benefit Agreements with Indigenous communities and Socio-Economic Agreements that outline how we work in partnership to deliver employment, training, business opportunities, social and cultural investments, and other long-term positive contributions.

Where De Beers began

Diamonds were first discovered in South Africa in 1867, sparking a diamond rush that spread worldwide. De Beers Consolidated Mines (DBCM) is a pioneer of the South African diamond industry and where the De Beers story began. DBCM is South Africa's largest rough diamond producer and has more than one million hectares under licence. It is a 74/26 per cent partnership between De Beers Group and Ponahalo Investments (Pty) Ltd, a broad-based Black economic empowerment company. Through this partnership, DBCM represents a wide range of South African communities, including retired workers, disability groups and leading empowerment business people.
