Our southern African partner countries face a complex set of climate mitigation challenges, and there is a growing need for companies to play a role in a broader, multi stakeholder response.

As part of our approach to climate action, we are working to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and increase the use of renewable energy. In many of the regions where we operate, electricity grids remain predominantly coal‑powered and access to renewable supply is limited, reinforcing the need to accelerate the transition to more reliable, lower‑carbon energy sources.

In South Africa, we have partnered with Envusa Energy, a joint venture between Anglo American and EDF Renewables, to provide wheeled renewable electricity to our operations. Set up to develop wind and solar energy solutions at scale, Envusa is progressing towards generating 520MW of electricity in its first phase.

“We believe this energy transition offers a unique opportunity to generate substantial new economic opportunities as part of South Africa's journey towards an inclusive, sustainable, and low-carbon economy."

Making use of abundant natural resources

By using abundant natural resources across numerous sites, Envusa is supporting the resilience of local electricity supply systems and acting as a catalyst for South Africa's renewable energy sector as part of the country's broader clean and renewable energy transition.

Our Venetia Mine offtakes renewable electricity from the Envusa network, specifically the Koruson 2 (K2) cluster, which officially began operations in South Africa’s Eastern Cape in 2026.

With the transition to underground mining, Venetia’s energy needs have changed significantly. It now relies mainly on electricity to power fixed plant and ventilation systems, and the Envusa network is expected to meet around 100% of Venetia’s electricity needs using reliable, renewable power.

Envusa marks a remarkable step forward for South Africa’s energy security, sustainability, and industrial competitiveness. Environmental considerations have also been built in from the start, helping to minimise ecological impact and protect birdlife. It is creating lasting local impact through jobs, skills development and long‑term investment in surrounding areas, with shared ownership giving communities a direct stake in the project’s future.
