As part of our focus on protecting the natural world, we protect double the amount of land that we use for mining for dedicated conservation of flora and fauna in South Africa and Botswana.
As diamond mines and the surrounding areas are highly secure, these properties provide a safe haven and vital habitat for some of southern Africa’s most celebrated and threatened wildlife, including rhinos, elephants, giraffes and zebras.
The rich diversity of species is thanks in large part to the dedicated conservation efforts of the on-site De Beers ecology teams that manage the reserves. In addition to providing protected habitat, the properties are also host to scientific research programmes as well as educational programmes with local schools and tourists to support local economic development.
