The short film series highlights how natural diamonds can fuel dreams, uplift communities, and create lasting impact in Botswana

De Beers Group today unveiled Talent Unearthed — a moving short film series that shines a light on the transformative power of natural diamonds and the exceptional talent of Botswana’s athletes. Rooted in the country’s rich diamond heritage, the series is a celebration of the capacity for natural diamonds to transform lives and livelihoods in the places where they are discovered.

Building on De Beers Group’s longstanding partnership with Botswana, Talent Unearthed illustrates how diamond revenues have been reinvested into the nation’s development, helping to nurture and elevate local talent. Since the discovery of diamonds in Botswana in the late 1960s, the country has used its earnings from diamonds to drive socioeconomic development, with Botswana having had one of the world’s fastest per capita growth rates over the period. Diamonds represent around a third of Botswana’s fiscal revenues and around a quarter of GDP, and the nation has delivered remarkable progress in education, healthcare and infrastructure as a result of the careful stewardship of diamond income by the Government of Botswana.

The Talent Unearthed series tells the inspiring stories of four Batswana athletes, whose journeys — from humble beginnings to international acclaim — reveal how diamond-supported community programmes can unlock opportunity, foster resilience, and fuel ambition.

Leading the series is De Beers Global Ambassador Letsile Tebogo, whose incredible rise from Kanye to becoming Botswana’s first Olympic gold medallist serves as a powerful symbol of what is possible when talent meets opportunity. Dedicated to his late mother, Letsile’s story embodies the impact of belief, community support, and the pathways made possible through Botswana’s investment in its people.

In episode two, viewers meet tennis siblings Naledi and Ntungamili Raguin, whose dynamic on- and off-court journey reflects the strength of family, discipline, and perseverance — values that continue to be nurtured by the country’s commitment to youth development. The series concludes with golfer Ouname Mhotsha, whose breakthrough as Botswana’s first Pro Female Golfer is a tribute to both personal tenacity and the infrastructure investments that support sport and inclusion across the country.

"For over 55 years, the partnership between the Government of Botswana and De Beers Group has created wealth for economic development and supported opportunities in education and sports, in turn cultivating talents like all the remarkable athletes featured on Talent Unearthed.” said Sandrine Conseiller, CEO of De Beers Brands. “With the launch of this content series, De Beers invites the world to discover the inspiring stories behind natural diamonds and their meaningful impact. Our belief in Botswana – its talent, its future, and its promise – remains absolute.”

Talent Unearthed follows the signing of transformative new agreements between De Beers Group and Botswana, which provide De Beers with long-term access to some of the world’s leading diamond deposits, while supporting Botswana’s socioeconomic objectives. The agreements include the establishment of the Diamonds for Development Fund, an instrument that will focus on economic diversification and community empowerment in Botswana. Natural diamonds drive direct economic growth through a range of local initiatives in Botswana, whilst investments in forward-thinking programmes help to support diversification and sustainable livelihoods through De Beers Group’s sustainability framework, known as Building Forever. De Beers remains committed to expanding opportunities for the people of one of the world's leading diamond-producing nations.

Talent Unearthed, in partnership with Fortune Media Group launches on 22nd April 2025.
