VICTOR MINE WINS TWO PRESTIGIOUS SAFETY AWARDS
VICTOR MINE WINS TWO PRESTIGIOUS SAFETY AWARDS
10 May 2018

De Beers Victor Mine continues to win accolades for its strong safety performance, receiving the eastern region John T. Ryan Award from the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) and a Workplace Excellence Award from Workplace Safety North in Ontario.

The east regional John T. Ryan Award for Select Mines was announced this week at the CIM annual convention awards gala, held in Vancouver, B.C.

De Beers Canada Chief Executive Officer Kim Truter said winning the awards for three straight years is an incredible accomplishment and a testament to the Victor Mine employees.

“Our Victor Mine had its best production year ever in 2017, proving once again that the best performing mines are the safest mines,” said Truter. “At De Beers our employees truly understand that by having a commitment to putting safety first, you can set up a healthy and productive work environment where the workforce, the company and the communities can all benefit.”

This is the third consecutive year Victor Mine has won a John T. Ryan Award for mining safety. In 2015 and 2016, Victor received the National Ryan Award for Select Mines. This is also the third year running that Victor Mine has won a Workplace Excellence Award in the Mining category. The Workplace Safety Award was presented during the 20th annual Mining Health and Safety Conference held in early May in Sudbury, Ontario.

“The team was extremely proud to receive these awards, which are recognition of the safe production culture developed by our employees and contract partners over the past 10 years,” said Alistair Skinner, Operations Manager. “Victor Mine has worked very hard to build a legacy of being one of the safest mines in Canada and we want to continue this tradition by finishing our final full year of production with another strong safety performance as we wind down operations in early 2019.”

De Beers Canada’s outstanding safety culture has been recognized several times over the past few years at the local, regional and national levels. In 2017, De Beers Canada was recognized with a national Silver Award in the Mining and Natural Resources Division of Canada’s Safest Employers.
