For the third time this year, De Beers Victor Mine has received a prestigious award for its safety performance.

Representatives from the mine were on hand recently to receive the Workplace Safety North (WSN) President’s Award, presented annually to the safest companies in five industry sectors. The President’s Award recipients are determined by scoring lost-time and total injury rates.

“When organizations make the health and safety of its workers top priority, they show employees, customers, and the community in general, that their values are in the right place. And people want to do business with, and work for, companies with that kind of integrity,” said Paul Andre, WSN President and Chief Executive Officer.

In May, Victor Mine received the 2017 Eastern Region John T. Ryan Award for select mines, as well as the Workplace Excellence Award from Workplace Safety North. Victor also received the national John T. Ryan Award for its safety performance in 2015 and 2016. This is the second time Victor has received the President’s Award, the first time was in 2012.

“Victor Mine employees work safely because it’s part of our workplace DNA; everyone wants to go home uninjured after every shift,” said Alistair Skinner, Operations Manager. “The awards and recognition are a great way to reinforce and celebrate our outstanding safety culture.”

The award recognized the mine’s safety performance during 2017 during which there were just 12 total injuries.

“So far during 2018 about 93 per cent of all days have been triple zero – or injury free,” said Mike Jordan, Superintendent of Safety, Health and Risk.
