Safe production the focus of global safety day

Safe production is the only kind of production.

That was the key takeaway for De Beers Canada employees as they came together to observe Global Safety Day on October 26.

Across our operations and offices, employees shared their safety experiences, looked within their individual teams to see where they can as a whole improve on their own safety culture and heard compelling words from senior leadership.

“The objective of you coming to work is not to recover a carat or mine a tonne, it’s to produce safe production at all times,” said Allan Rodel, GM of Gahcho Kué Mine. “There’s no rush, no shortcuts, no pressure – take the time you need to do it right the first time.”

“Safe work is faster work, easier work, more productive work,” said James Kirby, GM of Victor Mine. “It’s when you do not identify the safety risks that it takes longer, it goes slower, and production actually slows down.”

Here are some of the Global Safety Day activities that took place across Canada:

  • In Calgary, burn survivor and motivational safety speaker Spencer Beach encouraged employees to think about the reasons why they work and why they want to return home from work safely.
  • At Gahcho Kué Mine, employees shared their own thoughts on safe production via a drop box and participants were entered into a draw to win a Forevermark diamond.
  • Video messages from Anglo American, De Beers Group and De Beers Canada senior leadership were shared with all offices and operations.
