YELLOWKNIFE (June 18, 2014) - De Beers is proud to announce the call for applications for our 2014/15 Northwest Territories (NWT) Post-Secondary Scholarship Program.

Since the program was launched in 2012, De Beers has awarded $91,000 to NWT students, comprised of $56,000 in lump sum scholarships and a three-year, $35,000 Post-Secondary Sponsorship to an NWT student. The program accepts applications from all NWT resident students who are enrolled in or who are attending post-secondary degree programs in the following fields:

  • Mining Engineering
  • Geology
  • Finance & Accounting
  • Human Resources
  • Occupational Health & Safety
  • Environmental Sciences
  • Metallurgy & Chemical Engineering
  • Mechanical & Electrical Engineering

“Our NWT post-secondary scholarship program is aimed at growing NWT resident participation within De Beers in the Northwest Territories,” said Glen Koropchuk, Chief Operating Officer for De Beers in Canada. “We look forward to employing some of these new mining professionals at Snap Lake Mine or when the proposed Gahcho Kué mine goes into operation.”

De Beers’ NWT Post-Secondary Scholarship Program will award a number of $2,000 scholarships to NWT-resident students this year who are enrolled in mining-related post-secondary degree programs. The NWT Scholarship Program is aimed at growing NWT resident participation in De Beers, specifically in the professional job category where leaders and role models are developed.

The sponsorship scholarship offers the recipient up to four years of financial support as they complete their post-secondary studies. It includes summer employment with De Beers between university study periods, and permanent employment with De Beers upon completion of their university degree. The sponsorship could be awarded to a recipient of De Beers’ NWT Post Secondary Scholarship applicants for the 2014-2015 school year.

In keeping with our commitment to encourage women to participate in mining, De Beers is prepared to award half of the available scholarships to female applicants, pending responses received by the closing date. NWT Scholarship Recipients will also be considered for summer jobs at Snap Lake Mine in their subject areas.

Thirteen NWT students received funding through the program in 2013, including six women. The deadline for applications is July 31, 2014 and scholarships will be awarded in September 2014.
