The Minister of Minerals Energy and Water Affairs (MEWR), Honourable Kitso Mokaila, will visit Debswana operations from 20th to 22nd February.
This will be Hon Mokaila’s first visit to the Debswana operations following his appointment as the Minister of MEWR last year. The visit aims to apprise the Minister on Debswana business, current operational matters and long-term plans. The Minister will travel to Orapa on 20th February, where he will tour Debswana’s largest and oldest mine, Orapa, as well as the Letlhakane and Damtshaa Mines. On Friday 22 February, the Minister will conclude his tour in Jwaneng Mine, which contributes about 60-70% of Debswana’s total revenue.
The Minister will engage with leadership teams at the two mine sites and receive updates on short and long term production plans and how the mines continue to benefit communities around their operations.
Debswana, a partnership company between the government of Botswana and De Beers is a key player in the national economy of Botswana, producing in excess of 70% of Botswana's export earnings, 30% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 50% of government revenue.
