Earlier this month, the De Beers corporate office in Toronto was brimming with students! The Grade 8 graduating classes from Attawapiskat First Nation and Kashechewan First Nation were both in town during their annual school trips to Toronto, which included a visit to the De Beers office to learn more about diamonds and diamond mining.
The students took part in presentations about possible careers in the mining industry, key subjects to study in school and opportunities through scholarships, training and other local programs being offered by the De Beers Victor Mine. There were also discussions about how diamonds were formed and general geology involved in exploration and mining.
Attawapiskat First Nation and Kashechewan First Nation are located in remote areas along James Bay Coast, east of the De Beers Victor Mine. De Beers has Impact Benefit Agreements with both communities, which establish the various business, training and employment opportunities related to the mine.
