YELLOWKNIFE (May 14, 2013) - De Beers is proud to announce the expansion of our Northwest Territories Scholarship Program, with the addition of a new four-year post-secondary education sponsorship worth up to $55,000.
The sponsorship will be awarded to one of the recipients of De Beers’ NWT Post Secondary Scholarships for the 2013-2014 school year. The program accepts applications from all NWT resident students who are enrolled in or who are attending post-secondary degree programs in the following fields:

“The expansion of our NWT post-secondary scholarship program to include this new sponsorship component demonstrates our continued commitment to developing the next generation of mining industry leaders right here in the Northwest Territories,” said Glen Koropchuk, Chief Operating Officer for De Beers in Canada. “We look forward to growing this program in the future, with the addition of the proposed Gahcho Kué mine.”
The sponsorship scholarship offers the recipient up to four years of financial support on an increasing scale as they complete their post secondary studies. It includes summer employment with De Beers between university study periods, and permanent employment with De Beers upon completion of their university degree.
De Beers’ NWT Post-Secondary Scholarship Program will also award a number of $2,000.00 scholarships to NWT-resident students this year that are enrolled in mining-related post-secondary degree programs. The NWT Scholarship Program targets specific areas where the company has identified there is a lack of NWT applicants and it is aimed at growing NWT resident participation in De Beers’ workforce specifically in the professional job category where leaders are developed. In keeping with our commitment to encourage women to participate in mining, De Beers aims to award half of the scholarships to women, depending on the applicants. NWT Scholarship Recipients will also be considered for summer jobs at the Snap Lake Mine in their subject areas.
The deadline for applications is June 28, 2014 and a number of scholarships will be awarded in August 2013. Fifteen NWT students received funding through the program in 2012.
