De Beers believes that business is a catalyst for delivering socio-economic benefit to the communities where we operate. That’s why we encouraged businesses from around the Northwest Territories recently who joined us for our annual Business Opportunities Update to support the Yellowknife Food Bank.

Including a donation from De Beers, $3,400 was raised for the organization during the December 2 event. A number of people also brought non-perishable food items that were given to the Food Bank.

“I want to personally thank De Beers and their local business partners for the generous donations received on December 2, 2016,” said Janice Jenkin, Board President of the Yellowknife Food Bank. “The holidays are always very busy as we try to give extra groceries and food items so that our clients can prepare a delicious meal to share with their loved ones. In spite of tough economic times, your kind gift allows us to continue serving our neighbours and combat hunger in our community.”

This was far from a one-time thing. Since we began the Business Opportunities event, over $20,000 has been raised for a variety of charities in the NWT, including the NWT Literacy Council, KidSport NWT, Lutsel K’e Women’s Group, the Native Women’s Association of the NWT and others.

About 60 local businesses were represented at the event. According to our Socio-Economic Impact Report for Canada, De Beers has contributed $2.1 billion to the NWT’s economy since 2006.
