Students from Vezina Secondary School in Attawapiskat finished their school year with a visit to De Beers’ Victor Mine.
On June 20, students from the school’s Grade 12 graduating class and a Grade 8 science class, spent the day at the mine, located about 90 km from their James Bay community.
The visitors toured the Process Plant, the mine’s Pit, and the accommodations complex. David Okimaw, an Aboriginal employee coordinator at Victor, spoke with the students about careers in mining and the benefits of furthering their education beyond high school.
The trip is offered annually to the graduating students to show them what mining is, what a mine looks like, and where some members of their families spend their time when they’re away at work. The science class requested a visit so they can discuss and better understand various aspects of mining in their science class.
