LUCI – a high-tech friend that monitors driver fatigue at Victor Mine

24 Aug 2017

Haul truck drivers at De Beers Victor Mine have a new high-tech friend in the cab to help them detect and track fatigue as part of the mine’s drive for Zero Harm.

“LUCI” is an infrared sensor currently installed in four haul trucks at Victor, with the potential for two more trucks to be added to the three-month test. LUCI measures drivers’ blink rate and closure of their eyes while they are at the wheel, providing real-time alertness feedback to the driver. This allows drivers to understand their level of fatigue and work with their supervisors. Once the pilot project is concluded the data will be examined to see if the technology can be used across the mine fleet.

“At Victor Mine we are always striving for new, innovative ways to improve health and safety,” said James Kirby, Victor Mine General Manager. “We are thrilled to lead the drive to achieve Zero Harm and the LUCI system will be just one of the tools that help us achieve that goal.”

The monitor activates when the vehicle is started and is completely hands-off. It can monitor drivers’ eyes through all types of eyewear including contact lenses, prescription glasses, bifocals, safety glasses and even sunglasses. Drivers can monitor their level of fatigue using an easy-to-understand visual gauge and there are also auditory alarms.

“LUCI will become the ride along partner keeping a safe eye and always returning us home safely,” James said.

The system was provided by SIX Safety Systems, a Calgary, AB-based company specializing is delivering fit-for-duty solutions that mitigate the risks associated with drugs, alcohol, and fatigue in the workplace.
