Food donations in Namibia - Lilita’s story

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, our joint venture in Namibia, Namdeb, has partnered with the Anglo American Foundation, to provide food supplies to the most vulnerable households around our Namibian operations in Oranjemund and Ludertiz.

A total of 2,000 food parcels will be distributed to qualifying households, including those living with disabilities, pensioners, orphans, vulnerable children, and minimal incomes for a period of three months. All the supplies are being procured in the area to support local businesses.

The donation, which amounts to over US$150,000, also includes the provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the government clinic in Oranjemund as well as the Lüderitz hospital.

“We have an incredible team of volunteers from Namdeb and the community who help us pack and distribute food parcels. We’ve all gained a few extra muscles in loading and offloading them. The process is exhausting, but there are also moments of immense joy and pride that we at Namdeb are in a position to provide much needed food relief,” Lilta Marques, our Social Performance Manager at Namdeb, explains.

“The best moment by far was when an elderly lady, walking with great difficulty and surrounded by many grand-children, called me to one side, and in her language thanked us for the food. She explained that she’s raising her grandchildren by herself and that she almost had no food left. It’s moments like these that make it all worth it and keep us motivated.”
