Advocating for Nature

At De Beers Group we have the privilege of recovering nature’s treasures. In return, we must treasure nature. That’s why we’ve committed to protecting the natural world and it is why we’ve recently signed Business for Nature’s Call to Action.

Like diamonds, beautiful landscapes, unique plants and endemic wildlife are the ultimate symbol of forever. We have a responsibility and commitment to conserve them for generations to come.

So far, this has included setting aside and actively managing six hectares for conservation for every one hectare impacted through our operations. That equates to 200,000 hectares across southern Africa; protecting pristine ecosystems and endangered species, promoting eco-tourism and supporting innovative research programmes spanning heritage conservation, climate change, wildlife monitoring, species diversity and much more.

But nature is at a tipping point.

We know far more is needed to reverse nature’s loss and we won’t achieve this in isolation.

So, we have joined Business for Nature, a global coalition which unites influential organisations and forward-thinking businesses behind a Call to Action.

Alongside more than 1,000 other businesses, we will collaborate to protect, restore and advocate for nature. This involves taking action to reduce our own impacts, investing to protect and restore nature and innovating and scaling up products and technologies with a lower impact, all to help reverse nature loss. It also recognises that political leadership is needed to spur more action. So, through Business for Nature, we are working with other organisations, forming a collective voice to call on governments to adopt policies to reverse nature loss this decade.

As David Prager, Executive Vice President for Corporate Affairs explains, “We are honoured to work alongside likeminded organisations, uniting for action to reverse nature loss, not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it is vital for our future as businesses and individuals alike.”
