Embracing Sustainable Food Supply - Namdeb recently donated a compost shredder machine to the Futree - Ongaye Nda Tameka Project.
The shredder will be used by the Futree – Ngaye Onda Tameka Project to increase crop production. The project has a long-term vision of developing flourishing crop production sites in the community.
Namdeb’s General Manager Riaan Burger said: “Embracing sustainability is one of Namdeb’s core focus areas and I am humbled by the drive to alleviate household food shortages where residents have taken their own initiative to make a difference.”
The project is run by volunteers who provide gardening equipment as well as carrying out care and maintenance. They labour for two to three hours every Saturday or whenever they are available.

Activities include weeding, pruning and watering by hand as well as checking and repairing drip irrigation when required. The skills possessed by the volunteers also include bee-keeping.
The project, benefiting from the cool moist conditions in the area, has had success in producing butternut, potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, spinach, kale, onions, beetroot and garlic on a small scale.
The heart of Namdeb’s operations is along the southwest coast of Namibia with the main land-based operations in Oranjemund and satellite mines near Lüderitz and along the Orange River.
