We build constructive and stable relationships with communities to support the successful operation of our mines. We work in partnership with them on how best to develop sustainable value for local people.
Our social licence to operate is based on our ability to build mutually beneficial relationships with local communities. We make sure we understand the issues affecting local communities through effective consultative structures at all operations and implementing strong lifecycle planning to ensure our actions are appropriate at each phase of mining. This strategy is aligned with international best practice as well as our own Community Policy.
De Beers funded the purchase of a house in Musina for the Tshumisano Legal Aid Center, which provides legal aid to community members who could otherwise not afford it.

Relationships with communities
We use a number of tools, applied throughout the lifecycle of a mine’s operation, to effectively engage with our communities.
Our investment is focused on the needs communities ask as to address and the potential to create sustainable skills, jobs and diversified economies
Our closure plans are devised at the point of initial impact assessment and evolved during the mine lifecycle in consultation with community stakeholders
