Windhoek residents got the shock of their lives today when it was discovered that the Namdeb building had apparently disappeared! It appeared to have been replaced overnight by a new, drastically different building.
However, upon closer inspection it transpired that the original building had in fact been given a facelift by a massive building wrap, hence the dramatic change in appearance.
Investigations have since revealed that this is the first building wrap ever endorsed in Namibia, giving NAMDEB the distinction of being a trendsetter, on par with international developments. The wrap features an enormous image of a Namibian publicising the Diamond Centenary. Thus, one could say this is Namibia’s first “human” building, the first “talking” building and certainly the first building to have its own “outfit”.
2008 marks 100 years since the discovery of Namibia’s first diamond by Zacharias Lewala in Luderitz in 1908. Although the Diamond Centenary campaign is being staged by Namibia’s diamond industry, it involves everyone everywhere, as diamonds have benefited practically every Namibian – be it in Health, Education, Infrastructure, Job Creation and other sectors. NAMDEB’s building wrap follows many months of co-ordination between various partners.
In a related story, an increase has been reported in the number of pedestrians accidentally bumping into each other on Windhoek’s streets, as all eyes are seemingly glued to this stunning new development which has changed the face of Namibia forever.
