Comminution is essentially the breakage and fracture techniques used to reduce the size of the ore particles in the feed material through unit processes such as crushing or milling, and in the process liberating the entrained diamonds.

In most diamond recovery plants, a recrush stage is also added, after the concentration stage.  This allows for the liberation of additional, and generally smaller diamonds after the larger ones have been recovered.
