     COUNCIL FOR RESPONSIBLE JEWELLERY PRACTICES

The need for the jewellery industry as a whole to demonstrate responsible business practices is now well understood as a key component in maintaining consumer confidence and demand. It is also the right thing to do. Companies from a cross-section of the diamond and gold jewellery business have come together to form the Council for Responsible Jewellery Practices (CRJP).

The mission of CRJP is to “promote responsible ethical, social and environmental practices throughout the diamond and gold jewellery supply chain, from mine to retail” and in all countries.

De Beers, through DTC’s founding membership, is a major contributor to CRJP objectives and values. The DTC is currently working with other members to establish a baseline standard in respect of responsible business practices across the diamond and gold jewellery supply chain.

Since its inception in May 2005, CRJP has progressed to the point of having a full time secretariat and CEO, and has published its draft Code of Practices for public consultation. This was completed in August, with the Code of Practices launched in September 2006. The year 2007 will see the development of monitoring mechanisms and the piloting of a workbook and mining module. The monitoring mechanism will be implemented among members in 2008.

The Council for Responsible Jewellery Practices will deliver its mission statement by:

  • Developing a “Responsible Practices Framework” that defines how members conduct their business.
  • Requiring members to apply the “Responsible Practices Framework” through an implementation model that includes self assessments and is verified through independent third party monitoring.
  • Working with industry participants on business responsibility issues and offering guidance on use of the “Responsible Practices Framework” to implement responsible business practices.
  • Promoting awareness of ethical, social and environmental responsibilities by working with stakeholders including industry participants, trade organisations, government and civil society.
  • Acting as an advocate for business responsibility within the industry and developing initiatives to address ethical, social and environmental concerns through publicly and privately financed projects.
  • Working with stakeholders to improve continuously conformance with CRJP standards, ensuring they are relevant and achievable, while addressing key ethical, social and environmental challenges.
  • Encouraging members to promote the “Responsible Practices Framework” to business partners.
  • Seeking to be inclusive and extending the membership opportunity throughout the industry.
