     MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS AND REPORTING

The commitment to obtaining quality ISO 14001 certification at key operations is embedded in our Principles and Environment Policy.

In 1998, De Beers Marine was the first diamond mining company to obtain ISO 14001 certification for its Environmental Management System (EMS). At the time of going to print in 2006, 92% (12) of our 13 major mining operations were certified to the standard. Our Cullinan mine lost its ISO 14001 certification in July 2005 due to non-conformances in its management system, but was recertified in September 2006. Williamson in Tanzania expects to attain certification in 2007. Our Snap Lake and Victor projects in Canada are also certified, as are our exploration activities in India, Canada, Brazil and South Africa. DTC obtained certification in 2005.

All certified operations are now ensuring compliance with the new (2004) version of the ISO 14001 standard and all operations audited in the last year against this revised standard were successful. De Beers Marine, Venetia and Canada Exploration were recertified for their third triennial certification periods and De Beers Marine Namibia, Finsch and Brazil Exploration were recertified for their second certification periods. Expanding on the original scope, all exploration acitivities in India were incorporated into the existing EMS and certified in December 2006. Two certifications have been discontinued, namely Koffiefontein Mine following cessation of mining by De Beers and the De Beers Australia Exploration facility in Melbourne because the laboratory is no longer owned. Our objective is to have ISO 14001 certified EMSs at 100% of mining operations and other relevant operations by the end of 2007.

In 2006, we implemented two significant improvements to environmental management in partnership with the Internal Audit team. The first involved the development of a set of criteria for the assessment and contracting of our third party ISO 14001 auditors. The new criteria will ensure third party auditors are sufficiently rigorous and comply fully with the requirements of the ISO standard. The second involved the development of our internal data assurance programme. This requires Internal Audit verification of our energy, water and land disturbance data.

The Internal Audit verification of data contained in this report found there to be no critical deficiencies but an opportunity to improve our controls and processes relating to data collection. This is currently being addressed through one of our strategic environmental initiatives, namely the development of an electronic environmental performance reporting application. Once implemented the application will enable systematic data capture against our environmental targets on a monthly basis across more than 40 sites. This will facilitate the analysis and verification of data, as well as improved decision-making about environmental issues and more accurate reporting.

Together these activities improve our ability to ensure credible information is used in our reports and other communications with internal and external stakeholders.
