     IMPACT ASSESSMENT

The family of companies devotes significant attention to environmental baseline work. Impact assessments are carried out both at the earliest stages of new projects and where gaps exist at current operations. An extended discussion of social impact assessment and the environment and community (ECOHS) guidelines being developed for Exploration is presented in the communities section.

Key impact assessment activities in 2005 include:

  •  A long term hydro-geological and ecological monitoring programme developed at our Victor mine in Canada. This includes research in partnership with Laurentian University into revegetation and baseline monitoring of caribou.

  • Surveys and assessments were completed at our Kimberley and Namaqualand mines as input into the development of our heritage resources management plans.

  • An independent analysis of ecological data was undertaken at our Venetia mine to determine the impact of water abstraction on the Limpopo riverine forest.

  • An assessment of the potential impacts of acoustic surveys and underwater mining on marine mammals was completed by De Beers Marine in New Zealand.

  • Revegetation trials being undertaken by our Namdeb operations to identify best practice techniques for arid environments. Trials look specifically at the rehabilitation of vehicle tracks in sensitive areas.
