     DIALOGUE WITH ENVIRONMENT PRINCIPAL

Dialogue with Dr Patti Wickens, Environment Principal

Question: Why is sharing environmental knowledge so important?
Patti: As a global company we employ a range of environmental specialists working in a diverse set of ecosystems and legislative environments. They provide us with expert input on water management, biodiversity assessments and ensure plans and improvements in environmental management systems. While the specifics of environmental impact assessment and management are different at every site, there are common challenges. Knowledge sharing and teamwork between environmental practitioners enhances our ability to address these challenges effectively.

Question: How does the annual conference build shared learning about environmental issues?
Patti: For many years from the late 1990s we held various environmental workshops for practitioners from different operations. This became an annual family of companies conference in 2004, mainly due to increased numbers of practitioners working in a range of operations in different countries. The 2nd Annual De Beers Environment Conference was held in August 2005. The two-day event saw excellent participation by 60-70 environmental personnel from across the family of companies, including a number of senior managers. Twenty presentations were given and 27 posters were on display to communicate our environment strategy and other work relating to energy and climate, resource use efficiencies, biodiversity and conservation. The conference is an excellent forum to share experiences and best practices. It encourages interdisciplinary relationships and stimulates improved performance. Our 3rd conference took place in early September 2006 and addressed the theme of "Green is a Business Colour" in order to show the environment as a core part of our business. More than 90 environmental personnel were in attendance.
