CASE STUDY - SEAL POPULATIONS OUTSIDE NAMDEB OPERATIONS

Seal populations outside Namdeb operations

In June 2006, De Beers was approached by Seal Alert and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society about the management of cape fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus) on some of Namdeb's Mining Licence Areas. Namdeb is a joint venture mining company between the government of Namibia and De Beers. Fur seals are endemic to South Africa, Namibia and Angola. The management of fur seal populations is legal in Namibia.

De Beers does not own the land on which fur seal management occurs and provides no support to the government of Namibia in the management of seal populations. Neither Namdeb nor De Beers have any legal right to deny access to people granted the right of entry by the government. While the management of fur seals is beyond our direct sphere of influence, De Beers has and continues to engage with both NGOs and the government to understand the scientific rationale behind seal management and achieve consensus on the humane treatment of seal populations.
