Projects/programmes relating to Aids

  • Sero-prevalence study conducted knowledge, attitude, practices (KAP) survey initiated
  • A voluntary, counselling and testing campaign launched (65% of employee participation) ongoing collaboration with the Department of Health, district HIV/Aids office and NGOs
  • Various De Beers Fund (DBF) related HIV/Aids projects focusing on home based care, an orphan care project and the acquisition of a house for community counselling.

 

Projects involving community/social investment

  • Education development – helped facilitate the DBF in building additional classrooms Sports development – community sports facilitated and sports development programme for youth
  • Ongoing assistance with the Vukuzenzele agricultural project
  • Establishment of a DBF sponsored Youth Field Band Adult Basic Education was extended to include contractor employees
  • Donations were made in areas of education and sports development.

Provision of services to local communities

  • Providing various municipal services, including administration and maintenance
  • The mine manages water and power reticulation and supply to the village on behalf of the local municipality
  • The mine hospital has been converted into a private hospital, providing external services on primary, secondary and occupational health care as well as hospital and theatre facilities and ambulance services.
