Introduction
The discovery of diamonds near the Orange River in 1866 laid the foundation for the emergence of modern industrial South Africa as well as the modern diamond industry.
Most of the African subcontinent's diamonds are now produced in remote mines operated by De Beers in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia in partnership with the respective governments of those countries.
