Measures have been taken to reduce the affects of erosion caused by mining, deforestation, and spread of exotic Flora species in the forest and the conservation of a wide diversity of Fauna species.  This is all held together by a water management program, which aims to conserve this scarce resource.

Environmental awareness

Williamson Diamonds Limited created a "Good Neighbourliness Committee", that involve the village officials in the management and protection of the environment, not only on the mine, but in all the surrounding villages as well. Competitions are held at local and surrounding schools, to teach the children and their parents about the establishment of nurseries and the importance of tree planting, in an effort to promote self-sustainability.

Williamson Diamonds Limited is committed to the protection of the environment and has embarked on the implementation of an Environmental Management System in line with the International Standards Organisation (ISO 14001).

Safety

A million Fatality Free Man shifts were celebrated on July the 8th 2003, a first for a mine in Tanzania. There have been no lost time injuries reported on the mine for the year to date (2004). The mine has also worked ten consecutive months without any lost time injuries. We have also achieved 2.5 million lost time injury free man-hours.

Williamson Diamonds Limited also achieved a third place amongst the De Beers Mines in the 2003 Chairman’s Safety Shield.

Induction programs for contractor and temporary employees were implemented and 261 persons received induction in this period . The mine is busy establishing emergency health procedures and training the supervisors concerned.

Health

The mine completed a baseline occupational risk exposure assessment during this period. No major outbreaks of waterborne diseases were reported. The biggest threat is malaria, especially in the wet season.

The mine supplies free medical assistance to it’s employees and their immediate family. Mwadui Hospital has a full time Doctor, a Surgeon, and people from surrounding areas are also treated for a small amount.
