Varda Shine, Managing Director

Varda Shine is the Managing Director of Diamond Trading Company International (DTCI), the rough diamond distribution arm of the De Beers Group and the world's largest supplier of rough diamonds, handling approximately 40% of the world's supply by value.

As Managing Director, Varda’s role is to deliver the DTC’s business strategy of being the world’s most effective distributor of rough diamonds, maximizing value for clients and producers, while assisting in the creation of viable downstream industries in producing countries.

In 1997 Varda moved to London from Diamdel in Tel Aviv to join the Rough Diamond Division of the DTC, bringing her market knowledge to develop a new rough diamond assortment for the company.

By 1999, she was a Diamond Manager, responsible for the production of +2 to 10 carat diamonds and she also lead the integration of information systems at the DTC.

The same year, she was involved in the strategic review of the DTC which led to the introduction of the company’s business strategy.

In September 2003 Varda was appointed DTC Sales Director, responsible for Sales Planning, Client Management, Business Change and e-Business.

She was appointed to the position of DTCI Managing Director in January 2006, after a total of 22 years working within the De Beers Group of Companies.

Varda left school in Israel in 1981 and after a two-year conscription to the army, secured a place to study medicine at Tel Aviv University before moving on to work for Diamdel.

She has participated in business and management courses at Templeton College, Oxford University; Cranfield University School of Management, UK; and INSEAD, France.

On 23 November 2008, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Israeli Diamond Exchange (IDE), Varda was awarded an Honorary Lifetime Membership of the exchange.

IDE President, Avi Paz said at the ceremony that, "It is an honour to bestow upon Varda Shine honorary membership … [She] is a true pioneer and it is only natural for her to be the first woman in the IDE’s history to receive this title.”

Varda is married with one son. She enjoys operas, old movies, walking holidays and keeping in contact with her friends.
